John Brown was an anti-slavery abolitionist. One thing that set him apart from many of his contemporaries is he favored violent action to dismantle slavery. After an unsuccessful attempt to start a slave rebellion with guns and other weapons, he was charged with treason by the Commonwealth of Virginia and put to death.
